I Skandobs kan alla rapportera sina observationer av björn, järv, lodjur eller varg och bidra till kunskapen om rovdjurens utbredning och antal i Skandinavien. Länsstyrelserna i Sverige och Statens Naturoppsyn (SNO) i Norge ansvarar för att årligen inventera hur många djur av arterna som finns. I inventeringen är rapporter om rovdjur från allmänheten viktiga för att få så heltäckande inventering som möjligt. För att en rapport ska komma med i det slutgiltiga inventeringsresultatet krävs oftast att länsstyrelsen eller SNO besöker platsen, verifierar uppgifterna och eventuellt kompletterar med fler uppgifter. Om en observation som registreras i Skandobs är särskilt intressant för länsstyrelserna och SNO får deras fältpersonal därför omgående ett automatiskt meddelande från Skandobs.
