One hundred and twenty short passages from the wisdom writing of the ancient world, arranged into eight collections. The Argument with the River gathers what was said about floods, wells and irrigation. The Mouth and the Wall holds counsel on speech, silence, and the very old advice to sleep before answering. The rest cover measurement, craft, law and administration, mortality, thresholds, and the long project of reading time off the sky. Each passage runs two to five sentences and closes on a single line meant to stay with you. Everything is paraphrased in plain modern English and labelled that way, never presented as a translation, and never put in the mouth of a named historical person. Sources are given by tradition: Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Hellenic, Vedic, early Chinese, Levantine.
