Kantor Berita Antara didirikan pada tanggal 13 Desember 1937 oleh A.M. Sipahoetar, Mr. Soemanang, Adam Malik dan Pandoe Kartawigoena, saat semangat kemerdekaan nasional digerakkan oleh para pemuda pejuang. Sebagai Direktur pertama pada waktu itu adalah Mr. Soemanang danAdam Malik sebagai Redaktur (wartawan muda, usia 17 tahun pada waktu itu) merangkap Wakil Direktur; Pandoe Kartawigoena sebagai Administratur serta dibantu wartawan A.M. Sipahutar. Adapun kantor KB Antara terletak di Buiten Tigerstraat 30 (sekarang J. Pinangsia 70 Jakarta Kota). Pada tahun 1941, jabatan Direktur oleh Mr. Sumanang diserahkan kepada Sugondo Djojopuspito (mantan mahasiswa RH usia 36 th pada waktu itu, kawan Soemanang yang juga mantan mahasiswa RH, yang bekerja di Biro Statistik), sedangkan jabatan Redaktur tetap pada Adam Malik yang merangkap sebagai Wakil Direktur.
