Die offizielle App der Gedenkstätte Buchenwald. 1937 errichteten die Nationalsozialisten auf dem Ettersberg unweit der Stadt Weimar das Konzentrationslager Buchenwald. Bis Kriegsende inhaftierte die SS hier und in den zahlreichen Außenlagern mehr als eine Viertelmillion Menschen aus nahezu allen Ländern Europas. Ab August 1945 nutzte die sowjetische Besatzungsmacht Teile des ehemaligen Konzentrationslagers als eines ihrer Speziallager. Nach dessen Auflösung Anfang 1950 errichtete die DDR auf dem Ettersberg ein Nationaldenkmal. Heute steht der Name "Buchenwald" wie kaum ein anderer für die Vielschichtigkeit der deutschen und europäischen Geschichte im 20. Jahrhundert.
